AfD wins Saxony-Anhalt state election with 43.8 percent but falls short of an outright majority

The far-right Alternative for Germany has won the state election in Saxony-Anhalt with a decisive result, but without the majority it would need to govern alone. According to the preliminary official count, the AfD took 43.8 percent of the vote, more than double its 2021 share, while the incumbent Christian Democrats fell to 17.2 percent. The AfD's lead candidate, Ulrich Siegmund, won his constituency with 49 percent against CDU candidate Thomas Staudt.

In the new 83-seat parliament, the party holds 39 seats, three short of a majority. The SPD took 9.3 percent, the Greens 8.9 percent and the Left 8.6 percent. Siegmund threatened new elections if no coalition met the AfD's terms, predicting the party could achieve 50 or 55 percent. He rejected the BSW's proposal for an over-partisan premier as "Gewurschtel". The BSW has positioned itself as a potential kingmaker. Its lead candidate, Thomas Schulze, announced that the future BSW caucus would abstain in the third round of the premier election, while also saying the party would propose an over-partisan candidate from Saxony-Anhalt.
